Roof Flaws Spur More Legal Fights;Homeowners Seek Repair of Plywood

The problems with the fire-retardant plywood used on the roofs of1 million town homes and condominiums have spawned a tangle of lawsuits, including several in the Washington area. Homeowners are suing their builders, and builders are suing plywood treaters and manufacturers.

At issue is who will pay to fix the defective roofs, a cost that has conservatively been estimated at $2 billion.

The legal morass is the result of the use of the fire-retardant plywood, or FRT plywood, on the town houses and condominiums in 35 states east of the Mississippi River during the 1980s. In the Washington ...
