D.C. Called Unarmed for Drug War; Memo Says Narcotics Unit Has Halted Probes Due to Shortages

The D.C. police department is severely hampered in its war on
drugs by shortages of typewriters, cars and other equipment that have
prompted the narcotics branch to suspend all surveillance operations,
according to D.C. narcotics officials.
The narcotics branch also is not beginning any new drug
investigations because of the shortage of surveillance cars,
according to an internal police memo obtained by The Washington Post.
Only one surveillance car is available for for the 32 narcotics
officers involved in long-term drug investigations, the memo said.
