Haze attributed to temperature inversion

That blue haze that many Westmoreland County residents observed
when they woke Friday was not a mirage.
In fact, the state Department of Environmental Protection suggests
the meteorological phenomenon that stretched from Hannastown south
through Greensburg and Youngwood was probably a temperature
inversion.
"It occurs when the ground and lower air are significantly cooler
than the upper air. And when the upper air heats up from the sun, it
usually causes the pollution from the previous day to sink into the
cooler air and all of those particles become trapped," said DEP
