East Berlin, Soviets Split On NATO; Premier de Maiziere Defends Membership For United Germany

The East German leadership said here today that despite Moscow's objections, it was willing to become part of a "changed" NATO security alliance after the formation of a unified Germany.

After meetings with Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, East German Prime Minister Lothar de Maiziere told reporters that the two long-time allies had disagreed on the sensitive issue of security alliances, with Moscow pushing for a unified Germany to be nonaligned and for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and Warsaw Pact alliances to be replaced by an "all-European" security system.
