N.Y. Philharmonic Taps Kurt Masur;East German Conductor Will Replace Zubin Mehta in 1992 Season

East German conductor and political activist Kurt Masur is being
welcomed by members of the New York Philharmonic as the first
democratically chosen music director in the orchestra's 148-year
history.
Masur's selection to lead the orchestra, succeeding Zubin Mehta
and beginning with the 1992-93 season, was announced yesterday in New
York. Mehta's last season with the philharmonic will be 1990-91.
For most of the 20 years he has been music director of the
Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig, Masur has been respected by
audiences, critics and fellow musicians as a conductor of unusual
