New Fort Madison prison makes fiscal sense; Building a facility would pay for itself and address security at the same time

It's time for a new Fort.
That should be the recommendation of Iowa's Board of Corrections
subcommittee charged with suggesting what should become of the
maximum-security prison at Fort Madison.
Numerous mistakes led to the November security breach during which
two prisoners escaped. (They were captured after a few days.) Perhaps
it is true that budget cuts, which reduced staffing levels,
contributed to the mistakes; the subcommittee can sort out all of
that.
But regardless of what the panel finds, investing in a new prison
would be the smartest move.
