Officials:Prison could cost twice initial estimate; Debate continues whether or not to replace the Fort Madison facility

JOHNSTON (AP) - Building a new maximum security prison in Fort Madison would likely cost twice the money that's been publicly discussed, top corrections officials said Friday.

Gov. Tom Vilsack has said replacing the Iowa State Penitentiary at Fort Madison would cost $40 million but Iowa Board of Corrections chairwoman Robyn Mills said the figure would be much higher.

"It will be closer to $80 million for a maximum security prison," Mills said.

She and a corrections board member Art Neu said the panel has yet to come up with a recommendation, though Neu said he's inclined to replace the aging ...
