The Miracle of the Sepia-Colored Cards; Inspired by his dad's military legacy, a former Dubuqer reunites the postcards of WWII Japanese soldier with his widow.

It wasn't just another box of artifacts. To a Japanese family, they were known as "the miracle of the sepia-colored cards."

As ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of the end of Word War II wind down, the miracle brings a kind of spiritual fulfillment to a native Dubuque man.

J. Nicholas "Nick" Russo grew up in Dubuque, the son of Ethel and Romolo N. "Rom" Russo. Rom served with distinction with the U.S. Marines 1st Division in World War II, earning the Silver Star for gallantry during the battle of Peleliu, part of the Palaus Island chain, in the fall of 1944.
