Question: How did Bryant and Prescott schools in Dubuque get their names?

ANSWER: According to information from the Dubuque Community School District, Bryant School originally was called South Dodge Street School and was built in 1865. The school became Bryant in 1916 due to the fact that all the other elementary schools in the city were named after famous men.

The Board of Education chose Bryant after the American poet and newspaper editor William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878).

Prescott was first called the Third Ward School and was constructed in 1856. The building was renamed Prescott ...
