Mayflies bring work, questions

Telegraph - Herald (Dubuque) | June 25, 2005| | Copyright

They always seem to arrive when you least expect it - and in great numbers.

Mayflies - known to locals as fish flies - descend on the river communities of the tri-state area as sure as spring turns to summer.

The annual appearance of the insects with the short adult "to do" list - basically reproduce and die - often leaving local residents with more questions than answers.

What are they?

"They are just a part of living along the river," said John Klostermann, Dubuque's street and sewer maintenance supervisor. "You know they are going to come."
