Biography discovers explorer Samuel Hearne; Author's narrative gives the details of sea expeditions

"Ancient Mariner: The Arctic Adventures of Samuel Hearne, the Sailor Who Inspired Coleridge's Masterpiece." By Ken McGoogan. Carroll & Graf. 333 Pages. $25.

According to Ken McGoogan, 18th-century British poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge drew inspiration for "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" from a book by explorer Samuel Hearne.

Hearne crammed into a life of only 47 years many noteworthy and valuable accomplishments, which McGoogan rescues from obscurity in his book, "Ancient Mariner: The Arctic Adventures of Samuel Hearne, the Sailor Who Inspired Coleridge's Masterpiece."
