Exhibit shows rise, fall of Galena River; Grand Excursion saw Galena at the height of its commercial power

GALENA, Ill. - The Galena River we see today is much different
than the Mississippi River tributary that early settlers knew.
A new exhibit at the Galena History Museum, "From Hope to Despair:
Galena River Saga," chronicles the river's rise to commercial
prominence and its inevitable decline.
When the Grand Excursion passengers disembarked from the
steamboats - most of which were Galena boats - they saw the city at
