PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - It's a playground. It's a commerce
center. It's a destination. Prairie du Chien has bridged its past
with a prosperous future.
Prairie du Chien is the second-oldest settlement in Wisconsin (the
oldest is Green Bay.) Sitting at the confluence of the Mississippi
and Wisconsin rivers, the name Prairie du Chien is French for
"prairie of the dog." The city is named after a Fox Indian chief.
It became a trade center as early as the 1670s with the arrival of
Frenchmen Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet. A fur-trading post was
