The railroad station has just two platforms. The nearest major international airport is in Frankfurt, two hours away. West Germany's most famous museums, its national newspapers, its television networks-all are in other cities.

Bonn, West Germany's capital since the country was created out of the ruins of war in 1949, was never much more than the pretty university city that Cold War spy novelist John le Carre' dismissed as "a small town in Germany."
