On New Year's Eve, both Germanys watched as a droopy-eyed, white-haired man extended every muscle of his face and fingers to release from a great orchestra the ultimate German cry of freedom, Beethoven's Ninth.

Broadcast live on both East and West German television, Kurt Masur, conductor of Leipzig's Gewandhaus Orchestra, directed what he calls "a symphony for the future, a symphony about the basic idea of being human."
