El Monte boxing gym opens with fanfare

EL MONTE - Friends and family of slain sheriff's deputy and avid boxer Luis "Jerry" Ortiz gathered with law enforcement officials from throughout the region Saturday for the ribbon cutting of the Jerry Ortiz Memorial Boxing and Youth Fitness Gym.

The gym combines Ortiz's two passions: helping troubled youth and boxing, his widow, Chela Ortiz, said.

It also realized a longtime dream of Deputy Ortiz, a former El Monte resident, to open a boxing gym, which he never was able to accomplish in life, she added.
