On Aug. 9, 1922, one of the expedition drivers found a huge bone
in the bottom of a gully. Near it was a partial lower jaw in the
teeth "as big as apples." The next day they returned to the gully and
excavated hundreds of bone fragments. Examination of the teeth and
bones led the expedition's paleontologist to conclude that the beast
was a giant hornless rhinoceros, species baluchetherium, that died
more than 20 million years ago during the Miocene Epoch.
They collected 365 pieces of skull bone, all from a single
specimen. These bones were sent to New York for assembling. It was
