The Soviet Union's vaunted Lenin Library, one of the largest in the world, closed indefinitely today after inspectors declared it too decrepit to remain open.

The massive, columned library, graced by the silhouette of Soviet state founder Vladimir Lenin, once was the pride of the socialist world's intellectual community, drawing scholars from many countries to its nearly 40 million books, manuscripts, maps and other printed material. The building occupies an entire city block, a short walk from the Kremlin.

But with the deterioration of the Soviet economy, the library had been crumbling. ...
