Cranston Accepts Reprimand; `Keating 5' Senator Angers Colleagues by Denying Misconduct

Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) yesterday accepted an ethics committee reprimand for "repugnant" conduct, but then argued before the Senate that he did nothing worse than many of his colleagues have done, provoking a blistering rebuke from the panel's senior Republican.

In a dramatic conclusion to the Senate's tumultuous and often embarrassing 22-month inquiry into the "Keating Five" case, the committee delivered a formal reprimand of the four-term senator and Cranston responded with what began as an apology.
