Armenia's leader said yesterday that his republic is
accelerating its informal talks with Turkey about trade and
political relations in an effort to offset Ankara's recent
recognition of rival Azerbaijan.
Levon Ter-Petrossian, the 46-year-old Armenian president, said
in an interview with Washington Post editors that "the whole balance
of the region has been shaken" by Turkey's move last Saturday to
recognize Azerbaijan, Armenia's neighbor to the east. Azerbaijan
