After two years of relentless rejection of his ideas, deeds and
image, V.I. Lenin finally was to face his decapitation today.
Somehow, the tough old revolutionary managed to hang on to
his head, at least for now.
Workers armed with circular saws and diamond-tipped drills
hacked away at the massive statue of Lenin in one of east Berlin's
main squares for hours this morning, but a combination of driving
rain and hard Soviet red granite frustrated the demolition effort.
Lenin may have won the day, but the workers will be back Monday
and will keep at it until the statue, the subject of ...
