John Leopold's mother gave him advice as a young man that sticks to this day.

"Not everyone in the world is going to love you," he remembers her saying. "And that's OK."

She wasn't kidding. The Republican state delegate has been called an opportunist, a shameless self-promoter and worse by lawmakers from both parties.

But he's won over voters, who've allowed him to serve 20 years in Maryland's General Assembly and a decade in Hawaiian state government.

And now, the 63-year-old from Pasadena could be Anne Arundel
