Lighthouses offer more than great water view

Not satisfied with gazing at the historic Sandy Point Shoals lighthouse from his home, Daryl Wagner decided to pony up $250,000 to buy it when the federal government began auctioning off several lighthouses in the Chesapeake Bay.

"I don't know why," said Mr. Wagner, who purchased the 123-year- old lighthouse near his notorious Little Island with his partner Scott Wallace. "Maybe I was a keeper in my past life."

While the Coast Guard will continue to maintain the navigational aids on the lighthouses, the structures themselves are being sold off as part of the 2000 National Historic Lighthouse ...
