Most council candidates open to smoking ban

A countywide ban on smoking in bars and restaurants is something most candidates for county offices are willing to consider. But many are concerned about a ban's effect on businesses.

One County Council candidate is promising to sponsor a smoking ban bill if elected. Democrat Tito Baca of Arnold made the pledge at a Tuesday press conference at the Sly Fox Pub in Annapolis.

"As an educator in health education, it's hard to look in my students' eyes and say smoking is bad for you without taking a stand politically," said Mr. Baca, a college professor running against District 5 Republican ...
