Shoes, locals test water clarity
|
Starting Saturday, folks across the Chesapeake Bay will begin
digging into their closets and emerge with pairs of ratty white
sneakers.
After lacing up, they'll venture into creeks and rivers until they
can't see their shoes anymore.
This low-tech way of evaluating water quality is a tradition that
was started in the late 1980s by former state senator Bernie Fowler
in the Patuxent River. That original event in Calvert County has
spread to rivers and creeks around Maryland.
And they've become one of the most popular bay traditions, a
simple way to spread the message of keeping the bay clean. It ...
