Minister and Educator Wendell P. Russell Dies
|
Wendell P. Russell, 65, a former president of D.C. Teachers
College and Federal City College, two predecessors of the University
of the District of Columbia, died of cancer Sept. 27 at Greater
Southeast Community Hospital. He lived in Upper Marlboro.
Dr. Russell, a Baptist minister, had been pastor of Matthews
Memorial Baptist Church here for the last 12 years.
As president of D.C. Teachers and Federal City colleges from
1974 to 1977, Dr. Russell was credited with much of the preparatory
planning and design for UDC, which also embraced Washington
Technical Institute.
