County's budget book short on words

The county's proposed budget for next year contains scores of charts and lists that spell out spending on schools, roads and other services, but at a hefty 6,229 pages, it's not exactly light reading.

In fact, the nearly $1.1 billion budget has more than twice as many pages as the state's $24.5 billion spending plan.

Contrary to prior years, budget officials this spring broke down information by spending account instead of just providing department or bureau totals.

The trade-off is, with more numbers and more accounts, there is less written explanation.
