Battered by Vietnamese troops, riven by rivalries and decimated by famine, Cambodia's Khmer Rouge guerrillas were on the verge of extinction 12 years ago. As they straggled across the border with Thailand to escape Hanoi's invasion, the world came to know of the horrors behind their radical plan to achieve what they once called "total communism" through a single "giant leap forward."

Today the hardened guerrillas who seized power in 1975 are not only survivors of the debacle they wrought but appear well on the way toward winning political legitimacy.
