FCC Allows Increased Phone Service to Soviet Union

After days of snarled telephone traffic to the Soviet Union, the Federal Communications Commission yesterday authorized two American telecommunications companies to temporarily increase service between the United States and the Soviet Union.

The FCC action will allow American Telephone and Telegraph Co., the major international carrier in the Soviet Union, and IDB Telecommunications Services Co. in Los Angeles to use 24 circuits each on the Soviet satellite system Intersputnik.

Use of the Intersputnik circuits will be the first time that Soviet satellites will carry voice communication ...
