For a man whose stated wish was to be buried "without pomp, without splendor and without the slightest ceremony," Frederick the Great has suffered a blaring and bumpy eternal rest.

In death, the king has moved more often than most commoners do in a lifetime. In the final weeks of World War II, Adolf Hitler, who claimed the 18th-century king as an ancestor of his own Nazi movement, had the poor Prussian dug up and hidden away in a salt mine to protect him against the advancing Red Army. At the end of the war, the Americans moved the royal sarcophagus and gave Frederick yet another funeral. ...
