Abstract Expressionist Artist Robert Motherwell Dies at 76
|
Robert Motherwell, 76, one of America's best-known contemporary
artists who helped found and became a leading exponent of the
abstract expressionist movement, died July 16 at a hospital in
Provincetown, Mass. He had suffered a stroke at his summer home
there earlier that day.
Mr. Motherwell, who was most widely recognized for his series
"Elegies to the Spanish Republic," also was a highly regarded art
historian, art critic and editor of treatises on modern art, and he
had lectured and taught at several colleges and universities.
