I may previously have mentioned Dionysius
Exiguus, Russian-born monk, martyr (to the drink) and the historical
figure most entitled to be regarded as The Man Who Invented
Christmas.
It was in 525AD that Dionysius was asked by the Pope to
devise a calendar setting out the definitive dates of the major
Christian festivals. Logically enough, Dionysius began by identifying
the day of Christ's birth as December 25. His reasoning was that it
