When you drive into the Franklin Park neighborhood of McLean, you think you've arrived at summer camp. In fact, you have.

Franklin Park, south of the intersection of Kirby and Old Dominion roads in northeastern Fairfax County, was a summer getaway in the early 1900s for Washingtonians trying to escape the heat. Though it has been built up considerably since then, its hilly terrain, meandering streams, walking paths and abundance of trees have survived the bulldozers that have reshaped much of Northern Virginia.
