Espaliers Add Life To Garden Walls
|
If your garden is out of control, espaliers could be the way to
regain the upper hand.
Espaliers - trees and shrubs trained to grow in two dimensions
against walls or supports - can be shaped to emphasize a focal
point, add interest to a blank wall, block out or frame a view, or
reaffirm (for Mother Nature at least) who's in charge. Grown on low
fences, espaliers can border walks while letting sunlight reach
other plants. Trained over an arbor, they provide shade and privacy
for alfresco dining. On a south wall, they help cool a house in
summer.
