A New Voice For District Hispanics; Aviles Emerges Amid Unrest

A 32-year-old Salvadoran described as having an even temperament, a penchant for listening and a patience that sometimes frustrates his colleagues has emerged as a key figure in the Hispanic community after the disturbances in Mount Pleasant.

In the three weeks since other Hispanic activists chose him to lead the D.C. Latino Civil Rights Task Force, Pedro Aviles has tried to shape a conciliatory yet firm approach to Mayor Sharon Pratt Dixon's administration that he and others hope will bring about a fundamental change in the city's attitude toward its growing Hispanic community.
