Gannett Co. of Rosslyn, the publisher of USA Today, said
yesterday it has agreed to purchase the suburban Journal newspapers,
a chain of five dailies covering Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax,
Prince George's and Montgomery counties.
The deal, which could cost Gannett as much as $47 million and
includes a high-quality color printing operation, will put the
nation's largest newspaper publisher in direct competition with The
Washington Post for the region's suburban readers and advertis...
