Rudolf Serkin, the Gentle Man of Music

Rudolf Serkin, who died yesterday in Vermont, was a great
pianist and an even greater human being. He was modest with the
profound humility of one whose whole life has been dedicated to
transcendent works of art and gentle with the special gentleness of
one whose emotions have been purged and purified in the white heat
of Beethoven's and Schubert's late sonatas. Playing the piano was
never easy for him; his pain of creation could be sensed whenever he
threw himself into a musical masterpiece. But from his earliest
childhood there was no question how he would spend his life.
