Rudolf Serkin, 88, a pianist of supreme and compelling power and one of the greatest musicians of his age, died of cancer May 8 at his home in Guilford, Vt.

Mr. Serkin was said to have been the most eminent interpreter of Beethoven of his time, but he also was recognized as a leading exponent of the works of other Germanic composers such as Brahms, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Schubert. In addition to his performances as a soloist, he was one of the world's foremost masters of chamber music.
