The Life and Death of Elijah Harris; He resolved to turn his life around, and he died trying.

The first call, two years ago this month, summoned Officer W. W. Johnson to Woodson Junior High, where a 14-year-old was wrecking the principal's office. Johnson wound up arresting young Elijah Harris (after collaring him and threatening to toss him out the window) on a disorderly conduct charge.

The last call, a week ago, was to inform Johnson that his "son" Elijah was dead, shot to death on the mean streets of Northeast Washington.

Between those calls, though, was the heartening (if ultimately tragic) story of a tough young kid trying hard to turn his life around.
