HERE we are, April 23 has come round again, and out from the shrouds of history emerges the patron saint of England. He will receive brief salutes, and then he will be largely forgotten for another year.

We have never made much of poor St George. Perhaps the English felt no particular need of a patron saint, being perfectly happy with their perception of themselves as a people apart, effortlessly superior to all the rest.
