The death rate among Medicare patients rose at nearly half of
all hospitals in the Washington area at the end of the 1980s,
according to a new federal study showing that in 1989, D.C. General
Hospital had the region's highest death rate for the fourth year in
a row.
For the first time in their history, two suburban hospitals -
Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge and Anne Arundel General Hospital in
Annapolis - had an "excessive" number of deaths as a percentage of
