Watchdog attacks Law Society over pits payouts

THE row about the multi-billion-pound miners compensation scheme took another twist yesterday when the Law Society was formally criticised for failing to properly investigate miners' complaints against their solicitors.

Legal Services Ombudsman Zahida Manzoor said the solicitors' professional body had "failed to act in an impartial manner".

But the Law Society last night hit back and accused Ms Manzoor of "misplaced criticism".

The long-running compensation process involves hundreds of thousands of claims for industrial diseases linked to working in the pits.
