PLAYWRIGHT Christopher Fry, who has died aged 97, wrote fondly of Raven Hall at Ravenscar, near Robin Hood's Bay in the North Riding, which belonged to his maternal great-grandfather, and where his mother spent happy holidays in the later years of Victoria's reign.

Fry was not his real name. He was born Christopher Harris in December 1907, the son of Charles Harris and Emma Marguerite Hammond whose father, Edwin Rowland Hammond (1830-1907) was the youngest son of William Hammond (1802-85)

William had acquired Raven Hall and 1,800 acres of farm and moorland in 1845. He was a land ...
