Port honours Arctic explorer with plaque

HE was an Arctic explorer, a whaler and even invented the crow's nest.

And now William Scoresby senior has had a plaque unveiled outside his former Yorkshire home after the new occupiers found his name on the deeds to the property.

The seafarer lived in several houses in Whitby after arriving in the town as a young man but it was only when local couple Jim and Christina Rowe found his name on the deeds of their garden flat that the address of 13, Bagdale was confirmed as Scoresby's.
