Mount Vernon College Votes to Keep School Independent

The board of trustees of Mount Vernon College, a private women's college in Northwest Washington, voted at a dramatic meeting yesterday to keep the school independent despite serious financial problems.

The 116-year-old school on Foxhall Road NW faces a $1.5 million budget deficit, and according to one trustee, one option considered by the board yesterday was trying to merge Mount Vernon with another college in the District.

To the delight of students and graduates, many of whom demonstrated outside the meeting, the board decided instead to try belt-tightening and mount an aggressive effort ...
