Renovation Of Church Criticized ; Holy Sepulcher's Spirit Lost, Some Say
|
Preservationists are protesting renovations at the Church of the
Holy Sepulcher that they say are destroying the spirit and character
of the 900-year-old Crusader-built church.
The famed church stands over sites traditionally venerated as
the locations of Christ's crucifixion and burial. In the heart of
the old walled city, the church is Jerusalem's main Christian
landmark and drew hundreds of pilgrims for Eastertime rites.
Fires, earthquakes and weather have taken their toll. Inside the
dark, cavernous shrine, renovations have been creeping along for 25
years.
