ONE hundred and fifty years ago today, Britain and France declared war on Russia, starting a conflict in which more than 600,000 people died.

To mark the anniversary of the start of the Crimean War the curator of the Green Howards Regimental Museum, Major Roger Chapman, has written a book based on accounts of eyewitnesses.

The book, Echoes from the Crimea, uses diaries and memoirs of Green Howards soldiers - and one of their wives - to trace the course of the war, which started with a dispute between Russia and France over holy places in Palestine.
