Outrage as 40,000 civil service jobs face axe

MORE than 40,000 jobs are to be axed from the civil service in a
programme of swingeing cuts.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), which has large
satellite offices in Sheffield and Leeds, is to shed a total of
30,000 staff, while a further 10,500 jobs will be lost through the
planned merger of the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise.
On top of that, some 1,460 jobs are to go at the Department for
Education and Skills, bringing the total up to 41,960.
Yesterday's announcements by Gordon Brown were met with shock and
