New dawn for glass cockerel at abbey

A STAINED-glass cockerel once illuminated by the dawn every morning at a North Yorkshire abbey can be seen again after centuries in the dark.

A piece of a 13th century stained glass window - featuring the striking red bird - has been returned to Rievaulx Abbey, near Helmsley, after 80 years stored in a cardboard box.

Before that the fragment, which measures 4in square, had lain buried under piles of waste and rubble after Henry VIII's men discarded it as rubbish following the looting of the abbey in 1538.

The glass was discovered at English Heritage's central science laboratory in Portsmouth ...
