Geological Survey Shifts Nuclear Work; Changes Preserve Interagency Comity

In government, as in commerce, a big customer who pays cash can throw a lot of weight. Case in point: the U.S. Geological Survey.

At the behest of the Energy Department, the Geological Survey has agreed to transfer some functions from its geology division into its hydrology division or possibly out of the agency altogether, according to Assistant Director James F. Devine.

He said the changes would have no effect on scientific work but would "torque" the agency's long-established management structure. In effect, the Geological Survey, a branch of the Interior Department, is reorganizing ...
